Admissions Process

Here is a step-by-step guide to enrolling with us at The British School in
Tokyo. Additional information regarding admissions can be found under
the other pages within this section. For all further enquiries, please
contact us directly.

Pre-Registration

The British School in Tokyo operates an enrolment policy which is
academically non-selective. However, the School considers the following
criteria before enrolment to ensure that we meet the needs of all
students of each class. Please consider these criteria before beginning
the registration process.

Language

All subjects are taught in English, therefore English language proficiency is an entry requirement for our School. Where English is not the first language of the applicant, the school will make an assessment of spoken and written English skills. In addition, the main caregiver for each child must be a proficient English speaker.

Age

Our school year groups are determined in accordance with the National Curriculum of England, without exception. Out of year placement will not be considered by the School.
In order to determine for which age group your child is eligible, please click here.

Residence

As The British School in Tokyo does not provide a boarding facility, each child must live in or close to Tokyo with their family

Nationality

We welcome all nationalities at the British School in Tokyo. We may give priority to brothers and sisters of existing students, to students who are returning to BST for a second time and to students who have been attending a school offering a British Education. If there are no places when application is made, the student will be placed in a waiting pool.

The next step is to contact us at admissions@bst.ac.jp to ascertain
eligibility, check on space allocations for the relevant year group and, if
possible, to organise a visit.

Please download and submit the required registration documents here.
You will also be required to pay the registration fee of 40,000 Yen.

When all of the relevant registration forms for each applicant in the
family have been received, we will confirm your registration with us.
For an applicant to be placed in a waiting pool or offered a place, all
registration documents must be submitted. For Term One enrolment,
the first admissions decisions will be issued in February and on a rolling
basis thereafter.
