Admissions ProceduresA Step by Step Guide
Here is a step-by-step guide to enrolling with us at the British School in Tokyo. For detailed information on our Admissions Policy, please click here. Additional information regarding admissions can be found under the other pages within this section. For all further enquiries, please contact us directly on admissions@bst.ac.jpPre-Registration
1.Check eligibility
The British School in Tokyo operates an enrolment policy which is academically non-selective. However, the School considers the following criteria before enrolment to ensure that we meet the needs of all students of each class. Please consider these criteria before beginning the registration process.
-Language
All subjects are taught in English, therefore English language proficiency is an entry requirement for our School. Where English is not the first language of the applicant, the school will make an assessment of spoken and written English skills. In addition, the main caregiver for each child must be a proficient English speaker.
-Age
Our school year groups are determined in accordance with the National Curriculum of England, without exception. Out of year placement will not be considered by the School.
In order to determine for which age group your child is eligible, please use the guides in the right-hand column or click here.
-Residence
As The British School in Tokyo does not provide a boarding facility, each child must live in or close to Tokyo with their family
-Nationality
Although we welcome a mix of nationalities in the student body, the British School in Tokyo is predominantly, both in style and organisation, a British school. British students are given priority. Nationality is determined on the basis of the passport held by the student. If there are no places when application is made, the student will be placed in a waiting pool.
2. Contact Admissions
The next step is to contact us at admissions@bst.ac.jp to ascertain eligibility, check on space allocations for the relevant year group and, if possible, to organise a visit.
3. Application Forms
Please download and submit the required registration documents here. You will also be required to pay the registration fee of 40,000 Yen. Click here to download the necessary forms.
4. Confirmation of Registration
When all of the relevant registration forms for each applicant in the family have been received, we will confirm your registration with us. For an applicant to be placed in a waiting pool or offered a place, all registration documents must be submitted. For Term One enrolment, the first admissions decisions will be issued in February and on a rolling basis thereafter.
Post Registration
- Once you have registered with us, our Admissions Officer will contact you to let you know the status of your application.
- The child’s current or previous school will be contacted by a member of our school staff to carry out a routine background check.
- If the report from the previous or current school is satisfactory, and depending upon the year group for which you are applying, you may be placed in one of our waiting pools. Waiting pools exist for most year groups so parents are encouraged to register with us as early as possible. Places are allocated according to a student's position in his or her allocated waiting pool. For more information on waiting pools, please click here for our Admissions Policy.
- When a space becomes available in your desired year-group it will be allocated and offered to you.
- You will then be required to confirm in writing your acceptance of this offer and the enrolment process begins.
We will issue you with a School Welcome Pack and look forward to welcoming you into our BST community.
