Art & Design

There are numerous reasons why art should be taught, not the least of which is our common human universal need to create, make, and record. It may be used as a vehicle for self-expression; it helps develop creative thinking and can contribute to a better understanding of other cultures and historical periods. It not only improves co-ordination but is also an essential part of teaching the whole child. Art is unique in that it is primarily concerned with the aesthetic contemplation of visual form.

The inclusion of art in the school curriculum builds the foundation- stone and opens up avenues and doorways to a whole multitude of unique and diverse professions on a global scale.

Here at The British School in Tokyo, Art is taught by specialist teachers of Fine Art and Graphic Design at KS3 and KS4 in a well equipped Art and DT workshop. Where possible Art and Design makes cross curricular connections with other subject areas and embraces the rich and diverse culture of Japanese life. There are strong connections made with the Design and Technology department in order to make the most of the professional qualities of the specialist staff on hand.

Competitions and exhibitions are an integral part of the Art Curriculum with a strong emphasis on believing in your own ability. At the end of every academic year there is a joint DT/Art Exhibition held on campus which shows the quality of work the pupils create here at The British School in Tokyo. We hope that the pages contained in the Art and Design website offer you some insight into what our children are capable of here at BST.
