Design Technology

Design Technology is taught with enthusiasm and creativity through all Key Stages and age ranges at BST. At the centre of the subject lies design. The design process is a sequential process which begins with the perception of a need. Design Technology offers opportunities for children to develop their designing skills, including generating and developing ideas, clarifying a task, creating design proposals, communicating ideas, planning and evaluating. At BST we nurture creativity and innovation in the subject area by exploring values and attitudes to the made world and how we live and work within it.

The motivating factor behind all design technology activity is the desire to fulfil a need. For this reason all designs are made or realised - whether that is through prototype, batch production or some form of three dimensional or computer model. If the need is to be truly fulfilled the design must be legitimately evaluated.

At BST we encourage a freedom to explore and develop a wide variety of differing approaches to solving the same problem. We have a purpose built and well equipped Design Technology workshop in Showa for the older children.

All aspects of the Design Technology curriculum are delivered at BST including textiles, resistant materials, graphic products and electronics. We have built strong cross curricular links with other subjects throughout the School.  For example Year Seven students have been working with electronics building links with Science where they have been investigating series and parallel circuits.

In Key Stage 4, teaching focuses on the AQA GCSE Graphic Products Syllabus, It is the aim of the department that pupils use a wide range of appropriate sources of information in order to develop ideas and to investigate form, function and processes using a variety of media. Students should work with a range of tools, materials, equipment, components and processes, taking full account of their characteristics. Above all Design Technology at BST is challenging, thought provoking and fun.
