Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

At BST ICT is delivered as a discrete course in Years 7-9 and as a GCSE option. Lessons take place in our newly-designed and purpose-built ICT Suite, which encourages collaborative as well as independent work.

One question often asked by parents concerns the software used in lessons. We aim for students to develop transferable skills, so whilst we run mainly Microsoft packages in ICT, we strongly support the use of Mac devices in other subjects such as Art, and at home.

GCSE ICT is not just about how you use technology but also how it works and the effects it has, not just on our daily lives but on everything, from commerce and communication to politics and the music industry.

In Years 10 and 11 we follow the AQA GCSE ICT 4520 specification, with one exam at the end of Year 10 and two pieces of controlled assessment in Year 11.

In preparation for the exam, we study new and emerging technologies as well as ICT in society and its effects on people’s working and social lives. Whilst completing the controlled assessment, learners use software packages such as databases, spreadsheets and web design programmes.

In Years 7, 8 and 9 learners follow the English National Curriculum, using ICT to find, develop, analyse and present information, as well as to model situations and solve problems. The course encourages pupils to collaborate and exchange information and strives to increase the learners’ capability in the use of ICT and independent learning.
