HakubaBST Outdoors Hakuba Term One

Trip Objectives

The BST Outdoors programme was created to develop students through 3 main areas:

1. Creating a sense of community and teamwork throughout the BST Secondary School

2. Developing students’ skills through a wide range of adventurous physical activities in a contrasting environment

3. Applying the knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom to a very different context

This trip is all about starting the year with the right frame of mind. Students throughout the trip are encouraged to be mutually supportive and this is very helpful to new students who may have only just joined the school. Students are challenged to face new adventurous activities and are given the support they need to help them potentially face something that they may fearful of by both staff and other students in their form, year group or school

The Key stage 3 students spend time learning and honing new skills which help with future trips.

Activities

Students at Key Stage 3 will cover some of the following adventurous sports:

·         High ropes course and rock climbing

·         Canyoning

·         Mountain Biking

·         Canoeing and Kayaking

·         Hiking

Students at Key stage 3 also spend 1 full day doing science with the science department where they do studies of habitats, flora and fauna using hectares as a sampling tool.

Key stage 4 students are very much focussed on the international award and the key skills that need to be developed in order to pass their bronze and silver awards.

Year 10 students embark on the first of their practice expeditions and spend time learning map reading and navigational skills as well as outdoor camp-craft and cooking.

Year 11 students will be assessed for their bronze award and start on their silver award training, building on the skills that had been developed the year before.

Overall this trip brings the school community together in a very unique way.
