English as an Additional Language
The British School in Tokyo is committed to providing a fully inclusive educational experience to children from all cultures. An initial language assessment at entry level is completed with students whose English is not their primary language, in order to ascertain English language proficiency.Within the curriculum, lessons are carefully differentiated to ensure that key English concepts are regularly reinforced and specialist vocabulary is explicitly taught. This supports the ongoing progress of English language acquisition. Where necessary, a short term programme of intervention, delivered by a specialist teacher, can support students in recognising and overcoming language difficulties.
