Rewards And Sanctions

A combination or rewards and sanctions work most effectively with senior students.  We reward good effort, behaviour, achievement and attitude because we believe that celebration and encouragement of success breed more of the same.  We sanction lack of effort and poor behaviour or attitude (though these are rather rare at BST) when we believe that doing so will improve the situation.

Rewards

Rewards come in the form of House points given for achievement, attitude, tidiness, effort, politeness and any number of other positive behaviours.  At the end of each term, we award certificates to students with the highest House point totals – and these of course also contribute to the big House competition as well.  We also give awards for improvement, effort and achievement in all subjects.

Sanctions

Sanctions come in the form of detentions, either at lunchtime or, if necessary, after school.  But alongside punishment goes talk – with teachers, Tutors and then parents – to get to the root of the problem and, of course, to stop it recurring.

Please see BST’s Pastoral Policy for complementary detail.
