Reporting To Parents
Reporting student progress is designed to establish a dialogue about learning between teacher, parent and student. It is an essential part of the teaching and learning cycle and is necessary to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement. BST issues reports each term summarising student progress and effort in every subject. Student progress is assessed against national curriculum levels at Key Stage 3 and GCSE grades ranging from A* to U at Key Stage 4. These grades are based on summative testing and teacher judgement and methods and frequency of assessments may differ between departments. Students are also assigned an effort grade ranging from A to D for each subject. In addition to the performance summary, there is also a pastoral and academic comment from the students tutor and a target for improvement
There are two types of report:
- Summary Report based on the once a term input of tracking data by subject staff.
- Full report based on full written reports for every subject.
Summary Report
Term 1 ReportIn many respects the Term 1 report is the most important, as it allows us to identify areas which are a cause for concern in certain subjects and apply interventions at an early stage in the year. Parent consultation is key to this. On the basis of the Term 1 report, parents of students who are a cause for concern are invited to a parents’ consultation evening. Performance is assessed against target grades, which are based on testing upon entry to the school. If a student is below target in a significant number of subjects, parents shall be invited for consultation. At this evening, parents are given the opportunity to have an in depth discussion with subject teachers, view samples of students work and discuss strategies for intervention and improvement.
Term 2 Report
A second report is issued in Term 2 in advance of parents’ consultation evenings. The structure of the Term 2 report is identical to Term 1 giving a summary of student progress. This report is followed by a parents’ consultation for all parents. Parents are issued with appointments to see all subject teachers providing the opportunity for an in depth discussion about student progress. This evening is a useful tool for promoting student progression as the discussions with subject teachers allow students and parents to critically analyse areas of strength and weakness and apply successful techniques from other areas of learning to areas which require improvement.

A Summary Report is produced at the end of Term 3. An example Summary Report is available to download from the right.
