The British School in Tokyo is delighted to welcome back the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) for the second year of an ongoing partnership that continues to inspire creativity, confidence and bring joy through redefining what Shakespeare means to us in the world today.

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural programme, the RSC team will once again lead a week of dynamic workshops for Primary and Secondary students and teachers, from 10-14 November 2025. These sessions will be led by actors and directors directly from the RSC, who will use their famous ‘rehearsal room approaches’ in helping students unlock language, character, and storytelling through active, playful engagement with Shakespeare’s works.

Over the past year, the partnership has already made a significant impact on BST’s learning culture. Students have discovered new ways to connect with Shakespeare’s words, and teachers have developed innovative strategies to bring texts to life in the classroom. The continued collaboration with the RSC strengthens BST’s commitment to nurturing each student’s unique potential and ensuring that each student has the confidence to ‘speak up’ with their own ideas.

Ian Clayton, Principal of The British School in Tokyo, said:

“It’s a privilege to welcome the RSC back to our school. Their approach to Shakespeare helps our students find their voice and confidence through the power of performance. This partnership continues to enrich our community and aligns beautifully with our mission to provide a modern British education with a distinctly international outlook.”

Georgia White, Deputy Director of Creative Engagement & Learning, RSC, commented:

“We are delighted to be working in partnership with The British School in Tokyo. Through this partnership, young people are exploring and redefining how Shakespeare's plays connect us, help us learn about ourselves and our world, and bring us joy. They are also gaining confidence, developing their creativity and a deeper appreciation of language whilst building essential skills like teamwork, problem-solving and public speaking. It's incredibly exciting to be back at The British School in Tokyo to continue to make those kinds of learning outcomes possible together."

BST is sincerely grateful to The Halabi Thomaz Foundation for their generous support in making this ongoing partnership possible.

About The Royal Shakespeare Company

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is a leading global theatre company that sparks local, national and international conversations that build connections, create opportunities and bring joy.

We passionately believe that great storytelling can change the world, and that theatre offers its own unique form of storytelling: it’s live and shared, and transforms a group of strangers into audiences who, together, experience a story come to life in front of their eyes.

We collaborate with the most exciting artists to tell the stories of our time, and through a range of programmes we nurture the talent of the future.

We perform on three stages in our home in Stratford-upon-Avon, in London and in communities and schools across the country and around the world.

Our transformative Creative Learning and Engagement programmes reach over half a million young people each year.
