The British School in Tokyo (BST) is pleased to announce that it has been granted accreditation by the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), recognising the quality and integrity of the school’s educational programme and its commitment to the learning, development and well-being of students.

The accreditation follows a comprehensive evaluation process, including the preparation of a detailed self-study report and a visit by a team of fellow educators who examined BST’s educational programme, practices and provision against WASC’s rigorous criteria for school quality and student learning and well-being.

Key areas of strength identified through the WASC process included a clear and effective governance structure, with the Board of Trustees demonstrating strong strategic oversight while appropriately empowering school leadership. The school was recognised for its highly effective pastoral system, which places student wellbeing, belonging and personal development at its core across all divisions. It was also noted for its strong academic reputation and responsiveness to the evolving needs of its community, including the successful transition from A Levels to the IB Diploma Programme. Staff also described a highly collaborative professional culture characterised by mutual support, classroom observation, professional dialogue and a shared commitment to student success.
