ABOUT GRAPH
Areas where coral bleaching has occurred
Coral reefs are rich ecosystems where a quarter of the ocean's species live. 1998 saw a massive bleaching of coral in many areas. Bleaching occurs when the coral loses the zooxanthellae that live in symbiosis with the coral, and if this continues, the coral will die. The cause of bleaching is believed to be rising sea temperatures, and experts warn that the situation will become even more severe as sea temperatures rise.
